KindFishing with kids

KindFishing is a great way to introduce kids to fishing. If a child's first taste of fishing is KindFishing this is a win for nature. If a child is alread fishing with hooks, then KindFishing gives them options. The freedom to choose which method of fishing they prefer and when.

A book by Tom Rosenbaur is a great guide for introducing kids to fishing. The Orvis Guide to Family Friendly Fly Fishing is a great guide to the 'how' of fishing.

Many younger children may not realized that hooking a fish may cause it stress and pain. To some, fish are simply another object in front of them for amusement. But we can teach kids that when we fish for fun rather than for food can to do so without harming fish or the environment.

If your child is disappointed not being able to hook fish show them a side of fishing they were not expecting. For example, the tendency for fish like pond sunnies to forage together for food. The ability to convince the fish to come a bit closer to where yur kids are fishing. The ability to engage with a fish for a longer period of time.

If you fish at locations where others are fishing with hooks gauge your child's reaction if she notices them.  If she questions why, help her to not judge those fishing with hooks. Instead explain it as a choice.  People who KindFish are going to have to accept the fact that most people fishing near them will be using hooks.

It may also be a good idea to help your child understand the common threads between all anglers. Almost all anglers want clean water and healthier environments for fish. We all share an appreciation of the outdoors, clean air and being in nature. We all appreciate the time spent with family and friends.  Your child may show an affinity for some of the related aspects of fishing that you can also nurture.

If you have introduced your child to spin fishing, he may be impressed by the variety of lure designs. He may want to start a lure collection. Does he want to try to make his own?  If you have introduced a child to fly fishing, he may show an interest in the wide variety of flies.  Perhaps he would like to learn how to tie flies, and/or collect them. Maybe he will want to keep it simple - one reel, one rod, one lure, but KindFishing with you as often as possible.

Fish more. Do no harm.
